A dangerous trend circulating on TikTok encourages students to insert objects into Chromebook USB ports to intentionally cause electrical short circuits. This can lead to sparks, internal damage, and even puncture the lithium battery—creating a serious fire hazard.
Students and parents should be aware that participating in this trend—or any act of intentional destruction—can result in severe consequences, including but not limited to:
Financial responsibility for full device replacement
Loss of access to district-issued technology
Disciplinary action, including In-School Suspension (ISS) or placement in the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP)
Potential expulsion — Intentionally causing a fire is considered arson, which is a serious district-level offense and may result in expulsion. Law enforcement will be involved and may determine whether the incident qualifies as a criminal act under arson statutes.
Please talk with your student about the serious consequences of their actions and the responsibility and privilege of having access to a Chromebook.
Safety and accountability matter. Let’s work together to keep our students, schools, and school equipment safe.
